Five Home Remedies To Protect The Skin From Heat

Sure, summer is the season to kick back, relax, and just enjoy being outside and not freezing, but it’s not time to slack on your skincare routine. Moreover, in summer our skin can feel dehydrated from the harsh heat, the sun rays, and sometimes the extremely hot weather can cause the heat rashes, prickly heat symptoms, skin burns, etc. Here are some common and easily available ingredients which are great for the skin. In this summers days, these natural homemade face packs will ease the skin irritation and also treat the sunburn. Along with these packs, regular sun protection like SPF is must before step out from home and also plenty of water intake is a must.

Aloe Vera Face Pack

Aloe is a summer staple, helps to treat sunburns and skin irritations. Aloe Vera acts as a moisturiser and exfoliator for the skin. I mix olive oil and aloe Vera gel and make a smooth paste. I apply it to my face and neck for 15-20 minutes, then rinse with cool water. The mask will restore the moisturiser in the skin and act as a refreshing hydrator.

Yogurt and lemon face pack-

This is an anti-inflammatory face pack which also helps to treat the sunburn. I add one tablespoon of yogurt into a bowl along with one tablespoon of fresh lemon juice. Then, I add one teaspoon of sandalwood powder and mix all the ingredients well. Apply the mixture on the skin and massage well. Leave it on for 10 minutes before washing off with cold water.

Tomato Face pack-

Tomatoes are healthy for the body and good for the skin as well. These have a lot of vitamin C and antioxidants that help hydrate the skin and keep it nourished. Tomato is a natural astringent and can gently remove oil from the skin.

Usually, I make one tomato paste with one tablespoon of yogurt and one pinch of sugar. This pack is very effective to make the skin tone even. It also works well for dark patches and tanning.

Cucumber Face Pack-

The most widely used vegetable in salads, cucumber, wonderfully cools down body in the scorching heat during the summers. This cheap, humble, and easily available vegetable is packed with nutrients that are beneficial for our body and skin.

Cucumber is also a favorite extract when it comes to formulating cosmetic products. It is herbal and non-irritating and often used as a remedy for puffy eyes.

I mix two tablespoons of cucumber juice with half tablespoon rose water and one- two -tablespoon of Fuller’s earth( multani mitti/Indian clay). Apply it on the face and leave it on for 15 minutes. Wash it off with warm water.

This cucumber face pack absorbs the skin’s impurities and helps in reducing acne, blackheads and also help with the clogged pores.

Coconut Water Face Pack-

Coconut water boosts blood circulation to the skin. This allows the skin to breathe and get sufficient nutrients. Use coconut water to remove sun tan and protect the skin from after effects of sunburns.

Coconut water is rich in vitamin C that is known to effectively remove pigmentation. Other than for skin nourishment, coconut water is a natural anti-viral, antibacterial and antifungal.

I mix 1/2 a teaspoon each of turmeric powder and red sandalwood with little coconut water and applies it on the face. Then wash it off with warm water. Frequent use of this clarifying mask helps to get rid of the suntan and heat rashes.

These packs are very easy to make. The ingredients are very common and are super beneficial for all skin types.

A Clean Summer Face

Healthy skin should always feel smooth, soft, supple and properly moisturized. Even in the summer days, with all the heat, dust and tons of sunblock cremes can make our skin dull, tired and clogged the pores very easily. And especially in the summer, when we have so many outdoor activities, we have to stay outside for a longer time, we need to protect the skin in a more sensitive way.  Sunscreen is meant to be a barrier for the skin against the UV rays, but at the same time, sunscreens should not be the first and only skincare in our summer skincare routine. On the contrary, it should come last or just before applying the makeup. Sometimes, sunscreen can be applied as a daytime primer for face also. So, what should we include in our summer skincare that would make our skin well hydrated and also help to protect against the heat and UV rays?

Cleanser-

We need a gentle but effective cleanser in summer, which will make our skin clean and de-clogging the pores from makeup and stubborn sunscreens, while not making the skin super dry. We have several cleansing options, the gel cleanser, the foam cleanser, the creme cleanser, acne cleanser, makeup cleanser and all in one cleanser. I prefer the gel cleanser on a daily basis, and when I apply makeup I like to do double cleansing. At first, I use the makeup remover to get rid of all the makeup and then a gentle cleanser. Sometimes, I use a simple moisturized beauty bar to keep the cleansing routine simple. And when I feel my skin need some extra cleaning, I use the detoxifying cleanser like Indian mud cleanser or active charcoal cleanser.

Toner-

During warm weather months, a skin toner can come in handy to combat breakouts caused from sweat, sunblock, and dirt clogging our pores or a combo of all three. Our skin also tends to be more oily during sticky summer days, so toner is a step in the cleansing process that removes all the stuff left behind on your skin after washing, such as makeup, excess oils, impurities, dead skin cells, or even residue left from your cleanser. By wiping away all these pore-cloggers, you reduce acne and prevent future breakouts. Choosing the right toner for your skin is a vital step and the wrong toner will affect the ph balance of our skin. Toner for dry and combination skins are totally different from the toners for oily skin. So, we have to choose our toner according to our skin’s needs.

Exfoliating-

Exfoliation in the summer is a very needed skincare step. Whether it’s a scrub, clay mask or the chemical exfoliants, it’s very important to exfoliate our face at least twice a week. It will clean the clogged pores, it will remove the dead skins, it will help the blemish-prone skin and also works great to minimize the appearances of wrinkles.

Lactic Acid

Lactic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA), also considered as a chemical exfoliant. AHAs are acids derived from foods, and, as it turns out a type of acid that’s safe to apply to our skin. Regular and proper use of Lactic Acid serums can help your skin to reduce the appearance of aging, and they can be an especially good remedy against fine lines, wrinkles and other signs of premature aging from sun damage.

Peel-off Masks-

Though I am not a big fan of peel-off masks, in these hot and humid days I really can’t overlook all the benefits of these masks. Firstly, these masks are a type of physical exfoliant, which means they remove the top layer of skin to slough away dead skin cells. This makes skin feel smooth and looks glowy. Regular use of these masks actually helps to reduce the pore size and revealing firmer skin. Plus, by making peel-offs a part of your weekly routine, you may also begin to notice a reduced appearance of fine line and wrinkles.

Antioxidants-

Use of antioxidants helps our skin against the sun damage. Its anti-inflammatory results help to calm the skin and it also beneficial in skin firming and scars treating. Vitamin C, Retinol, Vitamin-E are some of the most popular and commonly used antioxidants in our skincare products.

Vitamin C-

A favorite among dermatologists, vitamin C is one of the most studied antioxidants available on the market. It has many skin benefits, it helps to boost collagen production of the skin, and make our skin brighter. It also helps to fade dark spots and therefore works as a tone corrector. I use vitamin C serum in my daily skincare, it is the first thing I apply after clean my face.

Eye creme-

Eye cremes should be used all year round, it is a basic skincare step that is needed to follow no matter what is the weather. It nurtures the most delicate part of our face, it prevents the fine lines around our eyes and also fades the visible appearance of dark circles.

Moisturizer-

Yes, we need a moisturizer even in the summer. A light and hydrating moisturizer is a must requirement in the summer skincare steps.

Nowadays, facial mists or hydrating sprays are very popular to keep the skin moist. Carry them in purses, and a spray a little when your skin feels a little dull, you will get the instant glowy skin.

Sunscreens-

I can’t give enough emphasis on sunscreens. We should use sunscreens even we are staying inside for most of the day.  It not only helps our skin from tanning but also helps the skin from the UV rays. SPF -30 is the minimum requirements for every day uses in the summer. And for the water activities, High SPF and water-resistant sunscreens are safe to use.

Other than this skincare regimen, we have to drink plenty of water in summer days. Exercising, cutting off the caffeine, adding melons and greens in our diet will also help our skin to be healthy from inside. In summary, proper cleansing, toning, weekly exfoliating, regular moisturizing and daily uses of sunscreen should be the key steps of skincare, and with that, we also need a little self-love.

Natural Homemade Skin Exfoliation by Priyanka Chopra

A few months back the famous Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra shared her skin home remedies on Vogue. I watched it on YouTube, the video got viral since it has been published. In this video, Priyanka shared her traditional homemade DIY body exfoliate pack, lip scrub, and scalp treatment remedies. The ingredients she used are all natural and quite staple in the Indian households and the body pack is also very popular across generations. If you have the time and the right ingredients at hand, then once a week of this pack will definitely take care of your skin in this hot summer days. I tried to follow Priyanka’s instructions and made this pack at home and then applied it to my skin. ( But before you use it on your skin, just make sure to do the allergy test by putting it on back of your palm, don’t use it if your skin got irritated). It can use as a great anti-tan mask for your face. This mask has all the natural ingredients which are very safe for any type of skin, it can use as a hydrating mask also. I will demonstrate the difference before and after using this pack in my hand. But first, the steps, how to make this amazing pack:

(All the ingredients are easily available in any Indian grocery store.) Here I took little less than 1/3 rd cup of chickpea flour(Besan), 1/4th cup of plain yogurt, 2 tablespoon milk, 1 tablespoon sandalwood powder(exotic ingredient from India), a little bit of lemon juice and 1/4th teaspoon turmeric powder. Then I mixed all the ingredients until it looked like a smooth mask. I apply it on my skin and let it dry for 10-12 minutes, then I rubbed it nicely and you can see it works as a great exploitation while massaging with your fingers and then use a wet cotton cloth to clean it and voila you can see the instant difference.

The skin will look smoother and more hydrated and because of the turmeric, your skin will look fresher than before. But excessive use of turmeric can make your skin a bit yellowish, so be careful about the quantity. Hope you will try it and let me know how you feel about this mask.
